Piscina Mirabilis is a legacy of the architectural brilliance from the Roman Empire. The concept for mirabilis museo d’arte contemporanea (mmac) began with the understanding that the construction system and magnificent volumes of Piscina Mirabilis were to be preserved to its highest integrity. Delicate and light interventions were strategically placed throughout the vaulted spaces allowing the existing architecture to speak the loudest.

Partnering with an adaptive reuse approach, the Museum gives one the opportunity to experience the building through a new layer: Art.

Open to the public directly from the street, the roof becomes a new public plaza for the neighborhood featuring wonderful views of Bacoli. Along with the roof, the Sculpture Gallery at street level answers the question that culture should be free and common knowledge. From the reuse of Piscina Mirabilis’ cavities as furniture to the reuse of its basin as a reflecting pool, it is a celebration of the original structure.

Discover the historical cistern’s architecture through various experiences that allow one to move through the exhibitions like a new kind of playground.
